PABLO PICASSO AND GUERNICA

If you are wondering which artist painted the piece entitled Guernica you should know that it was the Spanish painter Pablo Picasso.

Known as probably Picasso’s most famous work of art, Guernica is a powerful political statement. This masterpiece was painted as a reaction to the Nazi’s bombing practice on the Basque town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War.

Pablo Picasso - Guernica

Guernica meaning

Guernica is a town placed in the Basque Country. At the time of the Spanish Civil War, this place was considered the northern bastion of the Republican resistance movement and at the same time the center of the Basque culture.

During April of 1937 the Germans bombed Guernica for about two hours. Hitler took advantage of the situation to test out new weapons and some tactics of battle.

Guernica painting is the perfect icon of the modern art, some sort of the Mona Lisa of our times. Guernica may be the interpretation that Picasso had on what art can apport to set free  every human being and at the same time on how to protect the individual against some overwhelming forces like political crime, war, or death.

Guernica’s symbolism

Guernica is a painting that reflects how a war affects the innocent people. This painting is a reminder of the tragedies of war, some sort of an anti-war symbol, and at the same time an expression of peace.

Where is Guernica painting now

Picasso’s Guernica can be seen in Madrid’s Reina Sofia Museum of modern art. Guernica painting covers an entire wall in the 2nd floor of the Sabatini Building placed in Reina Sofia’s museum.

MADRID ART GALLERY

Madrid is home to many art sites. Actually, about half of the art spaces of Spain can be found in Madrid.

This is because some of the private collections owned by aristocrats in Barrio de Salamanca became available to the public after the war. After a while, the art galleries have extended along Paseo de la Castellana.

Something similar happened in the Conde Duque neighbourhood or the Carabanchel neighbourhood who joined this creative and bohemian movement that now boasts many workshops and creative spaces.

Due to some art galleries many artists got the chance to show their work or in some cases make a living. Some of the most important Spanish contemporary artists – Chillida, Canogar, Millares, Saura, or even Barceló – would have never got where they are today if there were no art dealers or gallery owners.
