Santiago de Compostela Tours: St James Cathedral

Saint James Cathedral from Santiago de Compostela in Northern Spain is an iconic symbol of the city of Santiago and the final point for many pilgrims walking or cycling the Camino de Santiago. The Cathedral welcomes pilgrims from all over the world.

Over the centuries, thousands of pilgrims worldwide have made their way to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia. The pilgrims’ routes here are known as the Camino de Santiago, the ways to Santiago.

Discover the cultural riches and unspoiled landscapes of northwest Spain as you walk or cycle the Camino.

Santiago de Compostela old town

TAKE A TOUR IN GALICIA TO SEE SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA

Situated in the northwest part of the Iberian Peninsula, Galicia is part of Spain, and yet it is a world away. The temperate climate and plentiful rains have given this land a grassy landscape that’s in contrast to the rest of Spain. Here you’ll find thundering rivers bordered with dense forested valleys, and an overall lushness that has earned this corner the title of “Green Spain”.

In the far North West corner of Spain, for centuries now the Celtic land of Galicia has much to offer to today’s tourists. Apart from its rich heritage, the city of culture of Galicia is a beautiful coastline and an interior with many little-known wonders. For the foodies there’s plenty to taste with Spain’s best seafood and some fantastic white wines as well as good meat and garden produce.

Here you’ll find the historic city of Santiago de Compostela: the resting place of Saint James the Apostle, and the final stop on Europe’s most legendary pilgrimage trail.

SAINT JAMES IN SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA CATHEDRAL

Many people think and believe that the Cathedral site from Santiago de Compostela is the place where the Great Saint James, an apostle of Jesus Christ, rests. So, the mortal remains of Saint James and those of the two of his disciples are kept in a silver jar that is placed in the catacomb beneath the Main Altar.

The artifacts of St. James transformed Santiago De Compostela into an important destination for many pilgrims globally

The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is among the most visited places in Spain and once you are here and have seen this marvelous historic site you will understand the reasons.

ST JAMES CATHEDRAL IS SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA CATHEDRAL

The beauty of Santiago de Compostela is the medieval city. Once completely walled, the city boasts its original narrow and circular streets that add charm, while at the same time they are confusing the visitor. The most important point of the city is the grand cathedral.

The Way of St James (Camino de Santiago) was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO

The beauty of its architecture is beyond doubt. This is one of the main reasons why this architectural wonder gathers thousands of visitors worldwide.

La Catedral de Santiago de Compostela is one of the most important religious places in Spain and it is also surrounded by other historic buildings like Rajoy Palace, the Gelmirez Palace, or Catholic Kings Hostal.

Once you step inside, you’ll most likely be shocked at how different the interior is from the outside. That’s due to the fact that most of the façades were reworked seven centuries after the church’s construction. Semicircular arches are everywhere, and heavy barrel-vaulted ceilings required the load-bearing walls to be thick and sturdy.

The Camino de Santiago is the best known Spanish pilgrimage trail. And the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela It is the final destination of this pilgrimage

Santiago’s cathedral was designed with pilgrims in mind. Following the layout of similar pilgrimage churches, the architects extended the aisles on either side of the main nave where worshippers gather and wrapped them all the way around the apse, the east end behind the altar. This way the pilgrims can walk around the entire church without interrupting religious services.

The beautiful cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and represents a truly grand finale to this pilgrimage

St James Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, Spain

The Cathedral of Santiago makes possible for the pilgrims to walk around the interior and to pay homage in chapels before getting to its center.

A Pilgrim’s Mass takes place every day and the immense incense burner swings its smoky way across all the cathedral.

Maybe the most interesting point for the visitors is the high altar which is located above the crypt where the relics of Saint James are placed. This altar has a Baroque style, glittering with gold and above it there is a statue of the saint that can be embraced by pilgrims and tourists through a special opening.

BAGPIPE MUSIC

Bagpipes are a musical instrument that is not so common and that uses a reed and air provided by the player. This mix creates a distinctive and peasant sound which is known as the bagpipe music. Bagpipes instruments have been here for many hundreds, or maybe thousands, of years and some people trace the origin of this instrument back to the snake pipes from the Middle East.

We have to mention that bagpipes are quite difficult to harmonize with other instruments and for this reason they are usually played in small groups or in bands made up only of pipes, or sometimes pipes and drums. The construction od this instrument is complex and even so they have been a favorite instrument in Europe for quite some time.

Perhaps because of the ancient nature of the sound they make, the Galician bagpipes present a lyric, almost magical quality in the tone they create. They are an honored instrument as they manage to express emotions.

Galician Bagpipes Music: "Gaita Gallega"
Bagpipes are unique as a musical instrument

The “Gaita Galega” or Bagpipes

The Galicians call the bagpipes “gaita galega” and these instruments can be traced back to the Middle Ages (as far as the 13th and 14th centuries).

These bagpipes are similar to the ones from Scotland and Ireland, but with some slight differences. There are two versions of the “gaita”: one that has a conventional “mouth” blown bag and another one that uses a different pump type action.

The sound they produce is also different due to the “drones” (which produce the sound). Normally, the Galician “gaitas” have three drones.

Besides, there is another difference: the color and the pattern of the fabric because it reflects the colors of Celtic Galicia.

When you are in Santiago de Compostela it is very likely to hear the sound these instruments produce and enjoy their music.

TAKE THE SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA TOUR!

GUIDED TOURS

Most of the guided tours heading Santiago de Compostela and Saint James Cathedral include access to the cathedral museum, which contains cool artifacts and religious art.

By choosing this tour you will have the opportunity to find yourself and your inner peace while enjoying the views of the magnificent Galicia.

¡Buen Camino!

100% Confidence in Angela and Paloma. They created and executed an amazing 9 day trip for my family of 9 to travel from Barcelona, to Seville, to Cordoba, to Malaga, and then Granada. Angela was so patient in the planning process. Listened to our objectives, created a plan, and then updated it many times until we thought it was perfect. And, it ended up being more than perfect. Once we arrived in Barcelona, Paloma took the lead and was available 24/7..immediately responding on WhatsApp. At every turn, transportation was top notch. Great drivers and great vehicles. Hotel at Malaga was 5star...exactly what we needed...a warm, cozy LHW oasis after a long week situated perfectly in a dynamic walkable city. All the activities they arranged were either super fun, super delicious, or super cool. Site seeing, food tours, bike tours...the guides were also so easy going, relatable, and accommodating. They always had the best restaurant recommendations...no need to question them. Every reco was perfect. We would recommend them 100000%.

Carameltrail did a terrific job planning and organizing our trip to Spain and Portugal. All the hotels, meals, guides, drivers and activities were excellent. Paloma and Angela always answered our questions promptly and checked in regularly to see how we were doing. We could not have been happier with the experience. We particularly enjoyed our trips outside of the main cities, especially our bike ride at Guadarrama National Park, our hike through Donana National Park, our visit to Douro Valley and our sailboat cruise from Cascais to Lisbon.

My wife Lauri and I just returned from 10 days in Spain. We were lucky to have worked with Samuel Rojo and Paloma Benty from Carameltrail. They both provided us with great recommendations on what to see and how many days in each city we needed. They were excellent in providing Really knowledgeable guides for us in Madrid, Toledo, Barcelona and Malaga. Also, I became ill during our last few days in Malaga and they were on the phone providing us with medical advice, changing our rail tickets , making sure all of our drivers were able to meet us and help with our luggage. The concern they had for us was wonderful! We would highly recommend them to anyone traveling to Spain who would like to travel independently of a large group. Again , Thanks to Samuel And Paloma Les Shelton and Lauri Vinick

Thank you Angela, you were so helpful throughout the trip with our questions and concerns. We had an amazing trip and each of our guides brought insightful knowledge of the area that we would only have gotten from a local resident. You gave us so many wonderful options of what to do on our free time as well. This is the only way I want to travel to places I have not been too before.

Our group of 6 experienced a most fabulous trip in Seville, Madrid, Lisbon and Madeira thanks to the expertise of Angela and Paloma from Carameltrail. We have worked with different travel agents over the years, but have never experienced the attention to detail, thoughtful planning, and wonderful execution as we did for this recent month-long trip. Angela listened carefully to our thoughts about the trip and scheduled experiences for us that were varied, authentic, and interesting. The guides that were secured for us were absolutely top-notch! We liked the fact that we had several guides for multiple days. All drivers were excellent and on time for each excursion. Throughout the trip, Angela and Paloma checked in with us each day to make sure we enjoyed our activities and constantly asked if they could do anything else for us. When we asked about hearing Fado music, they secured tickets for us at no extra charge. We have never had such personalized service. We would certainly use Carmeltrail again when traveling to that part of Europe. We wholeheartedly recommend them- you will not be disappointed. They exceeded every expectation we had for our trip.

Samuel and Paloma were amazing! Our trip was flawless start to finish-an incredible ten day 30th anniversary celebration throughout Spain. Their communication and attention to detail was excellent! We had to make a few last minute changes (on our end) and they went out of their way to accommodate the changes. Their responsiveness to our questions and needs was second to none. Could not more highly recommend Caramel Trail!

Booking our trip with Carameltrail was a no-brainer after our first trip to Spain. It was an incredible trip. This time we traveled to beautiful Portugal. They created a custom itinerary that perfectly balanced sightseeing, culture, and relaxation. Everything was so well organized—transfers, tours and accommodations all went smoothly. We loved how they included authentic experiences, like a guided food tour in Porto, a day trip through the Douro Valley wine region, a stop in a small historic village and time to relax along the Algarve coast before heading to Lisbon where we enjoyed a city tour that was custom to what we wanted to see. We ended our trip with an amazing day trip to Sintra and Cascais with a sailboat trip back to Lisbon-definitely a highlight and a perfect way to end our trip. Each recommendation felt thoughtful and tailored to what we wanted out of the trip. What impressed us most was their attention to detail—they provided tips on local restaurants, hidden gems, and even other sights we might want to see if we had extra time. We never once felt stressed; we could just enjoy Portugal’s beauty and culture. This trip was unforgettable, and we definitely recommend Carameltrail for your next adventure!

Caramel Trail assisted us on our travels to Spain and Portugal. We cannot say enough great things about their recommendations, travel support and guidance throughout our entire trip. Whenever we contacted Angela or Paloma they responded within minutes every time. They literally made us feel as if we were their only clients. When our trip was disrupted due to weather on Madeira, Caramel Trail had us rebooked and accommodated within hours, which was amazing. We highly recommended them to anyone traveling and needing top notch support!

We just finished a tour of Portugal. Angela and Paloma took care of all the details of the trip to include airport transfers, hotels, gastronomy and tour guides. We basically flew into the country and they took care of the land portion of the trip. They remained in constant communication during the trip and answered all questions in less than 5 minutes. All of their guides and car/van drivers were professional and were able to communicate in English (and in Spanish also). Several experiences were tailored made for our trip, such as hiking through a vineyard in the Duoro region, a gastronomic tour of Porto, and a nice Sunday drive through the beaches of Algarve, among others. Our driver was excellent and made suggestions on the spot for our lunches, dinners, spots for sightseeing and photography, etc.

Where do I begin? Our experience with Caramel Trail has been absolutely exceptional! This is the second vacation to Spain we have organized with them. They expertly crafted a custom trip to Barcelona, Val de Aran, and the Basque Country that exceeded all our expectations. From the moment we first contacted Caramel Trail, their friendly and professional approach put us at ease. They took the time to understand our preferences, interests, and budget, ensuring that every aspect of our itinerary was tailor-made just for us. Their creativity truly shone through in the unique experiences they included. We discovered hidden gems in Barcelona, wandered through picturesque landscapes in Val de Aran, and immersed ourselves in the rich culture of the Basque Country. It was truly a journey of a lifetime. Samuel and Paloma also went above and beyond to make sure everything ran smoothly. Their attention to detail was impeccable, from seamless transfers to hand-picked accommodations that exceeded our expectations. They even provided us with a personalized guidebook, filled with insider tips and recommendations, which made exploring each destination effortless and enjoyable. Throughout the entire planning process and during our trip, Samuel and Paloma was readily available, ensuring any questions or concerns were promptly addressed. Their friendly and knowledgeable demeanor made us feel like we were in the hands of trusted friends. We can't thank Caramel Trail enough for their impeccable service and expertise. We can’t wait to design a third vacation with them…next time with the kids!

Angela and her associate Paloma at Carameltrail did an amazing job for us! I wanted a completely custom 12 night tour of Spain and Portugal. This was late August & early September of 2024. I went in with no particular ideas. After a series of questions to get to know what my family did and didn't like, and only about 4 exchanges back and forth, Angela had created a completely custom, amazing and unforgettable trip for us! The trip included hotels, transfers, train tickets, entry tickets, tours, guides, and so much more!! Every person that represented the company did an amazing and very professional job. We did not have a single issue! Here is the bulk of what we did: Land in Barcelona for three nights and stayed a great hotel in an amazing location. We did wine tasting, food tasting (ask for David! He had us in stitches!), flamenco show at the concert hall, and an Gaudi tour (with guide and driver) in Barcelona. They booked us the high speed train (around 5 hours) to Seville. Once again, amazing hotel in a great location for 3 nights. We did a guided walking city tour, a different flamenco show, and day trip to Costa de la Cruz (with guide and driver). Seville was just wonderful! Then one of their drivers drove us to our next destination in Cascais (a beautiful beach city just outside of Lisbon). We stopped at lovely Evora on the way. Once again, the hotel in Cascais was topnotch! The next day we had a driver and guide take us around Lisbon. So lovely and so much to see! If Florence Italy and San Francisco had a baby, it would look like Lisbon. I love that city! Next day we had a driver and guide for Sintra. You DO NOT want to miss the palace in Sintra! It is just breathtaking!! And that evening they booked us a private sailing on a catamaran in Cascais. Sooooo relaxing and beautiful!!! Leaving Cascais, we had a driver that took us to Porto with a religious stop in Santarem (for the eucharistic miracle there) and Fatima. Both were my request, and they fit it in wonderfully! If you are Catholic, you have to visit those two places in Portugal! Final stop that day was Porto. Again, loved he hotel in Porto for the 3 night stay. We were right in the hubbub near the train station. We did a lovely city walking tour with a guide in Porto. We enjoyed an AMAZING cooking class there and did a full day of wine tasting too. You CANNOT miss the wine tasting in the Duro Valley. These are views that are some of the most outstanding vineyard views you will ever see (puts Tuscany, Italy and Napa, CA to shame). We loved learning about the port wines too! I think that's a wrap. It was an absolutely amazing and unforgettable trip. Carameltrails made all the dreams come true, and only in handful of messages and phone calls. They are professionals through and through. I would highly recommend their services.

We are just returning home from the best vacation ever and I can't recommend Carameltrail highly enough! Angela with Carameltrail guided us in the planning process before our journey begin and stayed in contact during our travels. The experience was seamless and stress-free. Angela is incredibly knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely cared about creating the perfect itinerary. She took the time to understand our preferences and suggested unique destinations and activities. Angela cared so much she met us at our hotel in Madrid. During our travels we were in contact with Angela and Paloma by WhatsApp and they created a Tourwriters App we could use to keep our schedule at our fingertips. Every detail, from flights, private drivers/car service, train tickets, and hotel accommodations (we often said we must be living right to get this room) but we knew the real truth was Carameltrail. We enjoyed walking tours, Tapas tours, private cooking class & a farm to table lunch experience in a private home in Portugal national forest. All these activities were planned by Carameltrail. We talked with all the guides and drivers we came in contact with and they all appreciated the working relationship with Carameltrail. Not one detail was over looked and they were quick to answer if we needed anything during our travels. If you are looking for a travel planner that truly goes above and beyond, look no further. This trip was Spain and Portugal. We will be booking Morocco in the near future with Carameltrail.

What an amazing experience with our trip to Spain and Portugal planned by Samuel and Paloma from Caramel Trail. From the very first email to the very last, it was just perfect! This was our very first time in Spain and Portugal (in Europe in general) and how many great memories we made. Everything was so well planned, every choice was perfect and Samuel and Paloma available to us 24/7. Every single person we interacted with was so nice and kind and so knowledgeable, we learned so much. Note that we were traveling with 3 kids, one of them being 6 years old but everyone was so accommodating and always mindful of them, it made the trip so easy. Thank you so much for giving us such a wonderful experience.

We have worked with Carameltrail for 3 trips (so far), and Samuel and his staff are the best travel company we have ever used. They have consistently exceeded our expectations at every level. A true measure of the commitment to excellence is not when things go well, but when there are problems. One of the dinner shows Samuel booked us to suffered a kitchen fire the day we were supposed to attend. As soon as Samuel heard the news, he didn't just alerted us. No, he got us reservations at an excellent restaurant, personally met us and walked us to it, and ensured our transportation was organized. I would hazard to say we enjoyed the evening more than if it had followed the original plan. Carameltrail is the benchmark to which we compare other travel companies. But we have yet to find another travel company that even comes close to the attention to detail of Carameltrail. Seriously, our only complaint is that we can't talk them into booking our trip to Greece! 🤣 Looking forward to trip #4 to Morocco!

We just returned from a wonderful trip to Portugal and Spain and could not have been more thrilled with the quality of service provided by Carameltrail. From the start, Samuel worked with us to develop an itinerary that covered all our desired destinations. Once in Portugal and Spain, we were impressed with the quality and location of hotels and the professionalism of the drivers (always on time, clean and high-quality vehicles). What most impressed us were the guided tours that Carameltrail arranged for us - a Rioja winery tour, Guggenheim Museum tour to Bilbao, Gaudi tour, walking tour of Lisbon and a walking tour of Madrid and the Prado. All of our tour guides were very knowledgeable and each one enhanced our understanding of the region, its rich history and fascinating attractions! From the day we arrived, Samuel and his office regularly communicated with us via text to ensure we were happy with our arrangements. We would highly recommend Carameltrail! They did all the work, so we could just enjoy ourselves!!!!

We worked with Angela and the team at CaramelTrail to plan our trip to Portugal and Spain, and they were absolutely fantastic. When our outbound flight was canceled and we lost a day of travel, they quickly and seamlessly adjusted our itinerary so we didn’t miss a single activity. Throughout the trip, there were several moments where we needed to make changes, and they patiently and efficiently handled every request with zero added stress. They were incredibly responsive to our preferences and even introduced us to a few experiences we wouldn’t have found on our own, which ended up being some of our favorites. I’d highly recommend working with them to create a trip that’s truly tailored to your vision.

Recently, my wife and I enjoyed our second trip planned with Caramel Trail. In 2019, we had an amazing trip to Spain. More recently (June 2023), we enjoyed a trip to Portugal with my wife's family. Just like our trip in 2019, Caramel Trail went above and beyond to make each and every experience 5-star! Our hotels in Porto and Lisbon were extraordiary and centrally located, which were very important to us. We had an array of tours, gastronomy, and wine tasting experiences and every guide and driver that we had were exceptional. Caramel Trail also made sure to set us up with outstanding restaurant reservations to make sure that we enjoy the delicious, authentic, and local cuisine of these great cities. After using them for two separate and incredible trips, I cannot recommend Caramel Trail enough!!

Caramel Trail is amazing! We've taken two trips that the Caramel Trail team organized and they've both been perfect. The first trip in 2017 was six weeks in Spain and the second trip in 2022 was six weeks in Morocco, Portugal, and Spain. Both trips were excellent. Samuel and Paloma know how to take care of every detail to ensure a great experience is had by everyone. They really work hard to ensure an amazing trip and it shows. I feel very lucky that we found them to help us plan unforgettable vacations.

We can't say enough good things about Caramel Trail travel agency. Manuel and Paloma manage a great business which offers special care for its clients throughout their journey. Our stay in Portugal and Spain consisted of seventeen nights of pure enjoyment. We visited Lisbon, Porto, Barcelona, Madrid, Toledo, Seville, Triana, Alhambra, Grandada, Nerja, Axarquia, Frigiliana and our last stop was fabulous Malaga. The choice of hotels and restaurants were excellentat at each stop. Everything was well organized as Paloma and Manuel were available 24/7 to take care of whatever we needed. The drivers and guides all did a great job as we were picked up at all locations in a timely manner. Fortunately, we had no problems whatsoever which is a major credit to all Caramel Trail personnel. We highly recommend Caramel Trail to any and all who choose to visit Portugal, Spain or Morocco. You will easily realize that you are in good hands once you begin your journey. Caramel Trail once again did an awesome job designing and taking care of us on our trip to Barcelona. Every guide and driver was friendly and knowledgeable, and you could tell that they really enjoyed what they do. Samuel and Paloma who run the agency even checked in by text a few times during our stay to make sure everything was going well for us. Top notch service! This is the 3rd trip I booked through Caramel Trail, and have used them previously for a trip to Portugal and Morrocco.
