IT IS DIFFICULT TO TALK ABOUT BARCELONA WITHOUT MENTIONING ANTONI GAUDI

  • Certainly the most famous Catalan public figure in the world. This famous architect contributed in an exceptional and creative way to the development of the architecture in the 19th and early 20th centuries becoming the main and most outstanding Modernist architect in Spain. That is why the Gaudi architecture is known worldwide.
  • Antoni Gaudi donated to Catalonia no less than 7 works that are now part of the UNESCO World Heritage: Güell Park, Güell Palace, Casa Milà-La Pedrera, Casa Vicens, the Nativity facade and the crypt of the Sagrada Familia, Casa Batlló and the crypt of Colònia Güell.

  • His art and architecture are world famous and you can’t say you’ve been in Barcelona unless you have seen at least a few of his masterpieces.  He shaped the city of Barcelona with amazing housing blocks, religious buildings and gardens where he showed all his creativity and innovative vision. FIRST YOU WILL VISIT WITH US CASA VICENS IN GRACIA NEIGHBORHOOD

Gracia is a good neighborhood because it is far enough to stay away from the touristic hustle and bustle and near enough to be part of the Barcelona’s exciting city center. During the last years it has become the cool part of Barcelona and many young people live and work in the colorful houses of the area. Here you will pass by many quaint squares where kids play after school and small taverns where locals enjoy a “menu del día” lunch.

You will visit Casa Vicens which was Gaudi’s first important project. He conceived this family home entirely and here building and decoration are integrated in such a way that one cannot be understood without the other. The colorful façade blends stone, green and white tiles and intricated iron grilles and banisters.

Casa Vicens is a breath of fresh air in a block full of sober houses. At this point you will find many elements that are seen in Gaudi’s later works, so it’s the perfect starting point of this hidden Gaudi tour.

CASA BATLLÓ ON PASSEIG DE GRACIA

There are two main Guadí’s works on Passeig de Gracia and Casa Batlló is one of them.  It is a very good example of the unparalleled creativity of the Catalan artist. Nicknamed as the house of bones, Casa Batlló is impressive both inside and outside.

Take a walk on the opposite side of the street so you can appreciate the mosaic façade. The combination of bold colors, the creative harnessing of light and curved style will make you contemplate the work for days.

COLONIA GÜELL AND PARK GÜELL

Only 30 min away you will find yourself in the Colonia Güell, a vestige of the industrial and modernist era. The Colonia is an important piece of historic and artistic heritage where the 19th century atmosphere is alive between its streets and buildings.

Colonia Güell was conceived by Gaudi’s main patron Eusebi Guëll which became Gaudi’s main patron and Antonio Gaudi commissioned him some of his most important works like the park named after him.

Are you excited yet? There is more…

Sometimes it may not seem fun hopping from museum to museum when in Barcelona, so Park Güell is the perfect combination of nature and art.

This garden is located on a hill above the Barcelona city center and is full of Gaudí’s touches. It is a fantastic escape from the bustle of the city and enjoy one of the best views of Barcelona and the Mediterranean.

In Park Güell you can stroll the grounds for free but will need to pay an entrance fee to access Gaudí’s private home and the main structure of the park.

You’ll often find bands playing and Barcelona teens flitting about, so be sure to make a trip to get a taste of both Gaudi’s Barcelona and the city’s modern culture.

The most unique building in the Colonia is without any doubt the Crypt. In this project Gaudi had complete freedom so he brought together for the first time all of his architectural innovations. Profoundly Catholic, for him it was an attempt to create a “monumental model of the Sagrada Familia”.

Even if it remained unfinished it was his incomplete lifetime obsession and it is a great catalogue of Gaudi’s innovations in the use of leaning pillars and catenary arches. The visit in this hidden Gaudi tour will help you understand his further works.

CASA MILÀ (MILA HOUSE) – LA PEDRERA

Before you call it a day, we would suggest some interesting activities for the evening. As this will be a Gaudi themed journey, we suggest ending your evening in the rooftop of one of his most emblematic buildings: Mila House.

Here every night it takes place a light and music show under the solemn sight of the helmet shaped chimneys. A perfect way to end your hidden Gaudi tour because at the end of you Gaudi architecture tour in Barcelona, you’ll be as passionate about Gaudi as our tour guides are!

Barcelona has an exciting vibe when the sun goes down and we will be delighted to show you how locals enjoy the evenings!
